Guided by the Code: Ethical Teaching in the Digital and Physical World

The Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers acts as a guide for teachers, whether they teach through face-to-face interactions or online.

The code stresses the importance of professionalism, justice, integrity, and dedication to the learners. In my opinion, as an aspiring teacher, adhering to these standards irrespective of the mode of instruction guarantees that students receive good education.

Observing Ethics in Face-to-Face Teaching

In classroom settings, the Code of Ethics requires teachers to maintain professionalism and fairness. For example:

Scenario: During our Grade 5 activity, some students struggled to complete their task because of the lack of materials of other students. Instead of showing favoritism, our provided equal guidance to all learners, ensuring inclusivity.

Provision: Article VI, Section 2 of the Code of Ethics states that teachers shall not discriminate against learners. This was observed by giving equal attention regardless of ability.

Another instance:

Scenario: I once had difficulties at home that affected my academic performance. My teacher listened empathetically and referred the matter to the guidance office rather than ignoring it.

Provision: Article VIII, Section 3 emphasizes that teachers must maintain confidentiality and act in the best interest of learners.

Observing Ethics in Online Teaching

Online delivery presents unique challenges, but the same ethical standards apply.

Scenario: During our online lesson, some students had poor internet connectivity. Our teacher recorded the session and shared materials afterward to ensure fairness.

Provision: Article IV, Section 2 highlights that teachers must ensure learners receive adequate instruction, regardless of circumstances.

Another example:

Scenario: During an online quiz, our teacher noticed that some of my classmates were messaging each other privately while answering. Instead of accusing them outright, he reminded the class about academic honesty, explained why integrity matters, and adjusted the quiz format by randomizing questions and limiting time per item.

Provision: Article IV, Section 3 of the Code of Ethics states that teachers must promote honesty and integrity in all forms of assessment. By reinforcing ethical behavior and adapting the assessment design, I upheld fairness and discouraged dishonesty.

Regardless of whether learning occurs in traditional classroom settings or online, the Code of Ethics continues to be a guiding light. The teacher should treat all students with equality and dignity, maintain confidentiality and integrity, and make teaching inclusive and accessible.

The Code of Ethics has no limitations in terms of how the teacher delivers their class. The Code of Ethics is a living document that helps teachers ensure that they conduct themselves professionally and with kindness. This is done by adhering to its guidelines both during traditional and online classes.
